According to Arise TV on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, Senator Ali Ndume said he does not take political opponents for granted, but explained that internal disagreements among opposition figures had influenced his decision to remain where he is while continuing to speak the truth.
Ndume said he had previously made it clear that he takes political opponents seriously and does not underestimate their capacity.
“Initially, and let me also say, I said it on this forum, that I don’t take opposition or political opponents for granted,” Ndume said.
However, the Borno South senator said he had observed divisions among some opposition figures, particularly over political arrangements and alliances that were yet to produce the desired outcome.
“But, again, when you look at the opponents and you see that they are fighting over something that is yet to be in their hands,” he stated.
Ndume recalled the political relationship between former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, noting that the two had previously worked together before their political paths diverged.
“Even initially you could see that Obi was with Atiku. They fell out. He joined ADC, moved out, and then formed a coalition, which is yet to… between him and Kwankwaso,” Ndume said.
The senator appeared to be referring to the ongoing efforts by opposition politicians to build a coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He said developments within the opposition had made him reassess his own political position, particularly as some of the political actors involved were still working to resolve their differences and establish a formidable platform.
“And those are the things that I look at and say, ‘Hey, I’d better remain where I am, but continue to speak the truth,’” Ndume stated.
His comments suggest that while he remains critical of certain government policies and decisions, he is not prepared to abandon his current political platform simply because opposition groups are positioning themselves for future elections.
Ndume has repeatedly maintained that his approach is to speak openly about issues affecting the country, regardless of whether his views align with the government or opposition.
