Some stories deserve to be told, retold and preserved in the collective memory of an institution. The story of Dr. Peter Otunuya Odili and Hon. Justice Mary Ukaego Peter-Odili is one such story. It is a beautiful testament to education, love, ambition, perseverance and the possibilities that can emerge from the University of Nigeria.
Their story began at the University of Nigeria, where two young people from different backgrounds, pursuing different professional dreams, crossed paths and found something extraordinary.
Peter Odili gained admission to study Medicine in 1970. His academic journey took him through the Nsukka and Enugu campuses of the University. He was actively involved in student leadership, serving as Speaker of the Medical Students Association in 1972 and President of the League of Human Affiliates between 1972 and 1974. He graduated with an MBBS degree in 1977.
Mary Ukaego Nzenwa gained admission in 1972 to study Law at the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus. She distinguished herself academically, graduating with a Second Class Upper Division and earning recognition as the best graduating student in Commercial and Property Law. She graduated in 1976 with an LL.B degree.
And here comes the beautiful part!
THE UNIVERSITY DID NOT JUST GIVE THEM PROFESSIONS; IT GAVE THEM EACH OTHER!
Their paths crossed at a campus party, where friendship blossomed into love. Mary and Peter eventually got married on 26 August 1977 in Benin City, shortly after her call to the Nigerian Bar and Peter’s graduation from medical school.
Their marriage was not a story of instant wealth or privilege. They began life modestly. Peter started his professional career as a House Officer at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, while Mary undertook her National Youth Service as a pupil state counsel. They built their family and professional lives through hard work, sacrifice, determination and mutual support.
Today, their individual accomplishments are remarkable. Peter Odili became a medical practitioner, entrepreneur and two-term Governor of Rivers State (1999–2007). Mary Odili rose through the judicial ranks, served at the Court of Appeal and eventually became a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, attaining the highest levels of judicial service.
Their journey is also a reminder that greatness does not always announce itself at the beginning. Sometimes, it starts with two young graduates, modest beginnings, big dreams and an unwavering commitment to building a future together.
They are blessed with four children and have built a family whose story is intertwined with professional excellence and public service.
