Nigeria’s opposition politics took another dramatic twist as the African Democratic Congress finally reacted to the shocking exit of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso from its coalition platform.
Speaking during a fiery appearance on Arise News’ Prime Time, ADC spokesman Bolaji Abdullahi admitted the departures hit the party hard — but insisted the ADC was far from finished.
“Yes, it’s a setback,” he confessed. “But is it the end for us? Absolutely not.”
Behind the calm words, however, was a clear sign of frustration as Nigeria’s much-talked-about opposition alliance appears to be crumbling before the 2027 elections even begin.
Obi and Kwankwaso, who together pulled more than seven million votes in the 2023 presidential election, had initially joined forces with the ADC in hopes of building a mega coalition strong enough to challenge the ruling establishment. But the alliance has now collapsed in spectacular fashion, with both politicians dumping the platform and moving toward the Nigeria Democratic Congress.
Abdullahi did not hide his disappointment.
“Personally, I’m not happy they left,” he admitted emotionally, though he refused to reveal the full details behind the split.
But in a surprising twist, the ADC spokesman also suggested their exit may actually be a blessing in disguise.
“In a way, it’s a relief,” he said. “Now we can focus without being under the pressure cooker they were trying to put us in.”
The statement is already fueling speculation that serious power struggles, hidden disagreements, and behind-the-scenes battles may have torn apart the coalition talks.
