President Trump said Wednesday he will accept the results of the midterm elections, after Democrats swept races across the country and flipped control of the House.
“I am absolutely willing to accept those results,” Trump told The New York Times.
Democrats won key offices and congressional seats in Georgia, Texas, South Carolina and North Carolina. They also picked up key Senate seats in what was widely seen as a rebuke of the president.
Of course, Trump did not take the blame. He posted on Truth Social that he was not on the ballot and claimed Republicans would have won in a “landslide” if he had been.
In a call to Fox News early Wednesday, he congratulated Democrats, saying they fought hard. He blamed Republican candidates for the losses, not his own policies, and said he didn’t see the results as a hit on him.
Hours earlier, before the first results came in, Trump had posted a string of angry messages attacking Fox News over its election coverage.
His calm reaction stands out. Trump refused to accept his 2020 loss to Joe Biden, and his false claims of fraud led to the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.
He spent the run-up to this election casting doubt on it, too. In October, he said he would accept the midterm results only “if they’re honest elections.”
Just before Election Day, the Supreme Court turned down a request from his administration to set aside 20,000 California ballots over claims they could have been cast by noncitizens.
With Democrats now in control of the House, Trump faces two years of investigations, subpoenas and blocked bills.
