SONNY OKOSUN, 17 YEARS AFTER
One of many legends of Nigerian music Sunny Okosun died 24 May 2008 that is 17 years ago today.
Were he still with us, he would have been 78 years having been born on January 4, 1947.
In the years past, there have been solemn celebrations in prayers and suplications for the repose of his creative soul.
But not this time as there seems to be an upsurge in the celebration of the music icon whose music touched our lives and most especially helped liberate southern Africa.
Today Saturday May, 24 2025 a grand musical celebration and concert for Okosun by Oziddi New Generation, a new generation band of musicians most of whom were members of Oziddi led by Faith okosun onokhua as project Director is expected.
They are expected to perform Okosun wave making songs to a diverse distinguished audience.
The event to be chaired by respected Social engineer Julius Amioje Omije also has many distinguished Nigerians from all walks of life holds at the Sonny Okosun auditorium, Ogba, Ikeja, Lagos.
Project Director of the event Faith Okosun Onokhua who was one of the closest persons to Okosun having toured with him as a back up singer till his death hinted that Sonny Okosun who created a huge musical impact in the world should always be celebrated.
She indicated that Oziddi New Generation
Band will pick from Okosuns long list of tracks and albums to celebrate his life and musical legacy.
Also speaking in a social media video presentation, Ibhafidon Okosun, one of younger brothers of Sonny Okosun gave out an express invitation to all adding that “you must join us celebrate a big legend of Nigeria music and don’t miss it.
Also on Sunday May 25, 2025 another show is going down in Irrua, Okosuns home town…
This Sonny Okosun memorial event holding at Irrua Edo state is set up by one of Esan musical ambassadors Emperor Wadada supported by other Esan musicians.
Wadada disclosed that
Sonny Okosun is worth celebrating any time any day.
According to Wadada, no amount of celebration for Sonny Okosun is too big or small. He is one of my musical mentors and big inspiration
Many not that Sonny Okosun is one of Nigerias top 20 artistes of all times with over 14 albums to his credit.
Some of these songs and albums are papas land, fire in soweto, mother and child. No more wars, Tireni oluwa, Zigara ha ozi, Holy wars,Togetherness ….etc
