The recent approval by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) of a 50% tariff increase by telecommunications companies has sparked widespread concern among Nigerians already struggling to make ends meet. This hike, the first since 2013, adds to the mounting burdens of rising costs of food, drinks, transportation, building materials, house rent, and school fees.
The NCC’s decision, though lower than the 100% increase requested by telcos, raises the average cost of calls from N11 to N16.5 per minute, SMS charges from N4 to N6, and the cost of 1GB of data from N350 to N525. This significant increase will undoubtedly affect Nigerians’ purchasing power and exacerbate the already high cost of living.
The question on everyone’s mind is: who will help the masses adjust to this new reality? The government, telcos, or someone else? As the prices of essential goods and services continue to skyrocket, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for ordinary Nigerians to survive.
*A Double-Edged Sword*
Proponents of the tariff hike argue that it will enable telcos to invest in infrastructure and innovation, ultimately benefiting consumers through improved services and connectivity. However, this argument rings hollow for many Nigerians who are already struggling to afford basic necessities.
On the other hand, critics of the hike point out that it will only serve to further enrich telcos at the expense of consumers. They argue that the government should be working to reduce the cost of living, not increase it.

As Nigerians grapple with the implications of this tariff hike, it’s essential to demand action from those in power. The government must take concrete steps to address the rising cost of living and ensure that the most vulnerable members of society are protected.
