The recent donation of N2 million to Legionnaires in Degema Local Government Area (DELGA) by Council Chairman, Hon. Dr. Agiriye Monima Harry, has left many underwhelmed and complaining it was way below the mark.
The donation, made during a special Thanksgiving service commemorating the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, seems paltry compared to the sacrifices made by the Legionnaires.
In contrast, other state governments and sub nationals and even individuals have shown more substantial support for their Legionnaires. For instance, Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe donated N32 million to the Nigerian Legion ¹. Similarly, the Borno State Government redeemed a pledge of N20 million and donated a Hilux vehicle, along with food items, to families of fallen heroes . Even the Kebbi State Government donated N20 million to the Nigerian Legion.
The DELGA Chairman’s donation of N2 million, while appreciated, seems like a drop in the ocean compared to these more substantial contributions. It raises questions about the prioritization of funds by local government authorities . Are Legionnaires, who have dedicated their lives to serving the nation, not deserving of more significant support?
It is essential to honor our heroes and provide meaningful support to those who have sacrificed for the country. The DELGA Chairman’s gesture, although well-intentioned, falls short of demonstrating the requisite appreciation and commitment to the welfare of Legionnaires.
