David Odogu – the new Franz Berkenbauer!
The young lad in the picture is David Odogu.
He has been described as Franz Berkenbauer’s reincarnation by virtue of his football ability, his potentials and his German nationality.
He is a Nigerian. His father, Joseph Odogu, is a former Nigerian footballer who migrated abroad, played in Malaysia and ended up in Berlin, Germany, in the past 2 decades.
David, 18 years of age by June this year, is the ‘product’ of his marriage to a German woman.
Earlier this week, David has again been invited to the German Under-18 national team, a steady progression in his rapid climb up the ladder of European football.
A few months ago, he was at the heart of the Under-17 German national team that won the FIFA Under-17 World Championship where his performance left football agents and clubs salivating for more of him.
He is currently one of the most sought-after players in Europe by some of the biggest clubs – Juventus, Manchester United, Borussia Dortmund, and so on. Teams are all asking about this prodigious, young, quick, tall, strong and very intelligent Central Defender – a libero.
David is already being likened to the legendary late former Captain and former Coach of the German National team, Franz Berkenbauer, one of the greatest German footballers ever, one of only two footballers in history to be have been named World Footballer of the Year (1972 and 1976) whilst playing at Centre Back position. Italy’s Fabio Canavari is the second player, in 2006.
There is an ongoing scramble for David’s signature by some of the biggest clubs in Europe. It is expected that by summer he would have anchored his future to the fortunes of one of them.
His father, Joseph Odogu, has been in Nigeria in the past few days.
He, along with two of mutual friends, visited me in my home, and, of course, we shared communion and discussed David.
He admits that the current surge in the number of agents of European clubs inquiring and seeking to secure David’s signature is overwhelming.
David is playing in the Under-19 team of Wolfsburg FC, a club that may no longer hold down this exceptionally gifted player from the advances that are presently coming his way in torrents.
He is generating and attracting massive global interest. Many see in him and his style of play, glimpses of the great Kaiser, the creator of the ‘Libero’ role in football, Franz Berkenbauer.
Although he may also qualify to represent Nigeria at senior level, David, has never visited Nigeria and currently holds a German passport.
Watch out for him on the international football circuit in the immediate future.
