Presidential Tribunal Court Reportedly Picks Date To Deliver Judgement On Tinubu, Atiku, Obi, Others
The Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) has allegedly set a date to deliver judgment in the suit challenging the victory of President Bola Tinubu in the February 2023 presidential election.
According to a report by The Vanguard, PEPC has allegedly fixed Saturday, September 16 as the date to deliver its final ruling on the outcome of the 2023 presidential election.
Recall that that after adopting the final written addresses of the parties involved in the suit, the five-man tribunal headed by Justice Haruna Simon Tsamani reserved judgment and said a date to deliver the verdict would be communicated to concerned parties and their lawyers.
Multiple sources claimed on Monday that the tribunal has now allegedly picked September 16 as the judgment date.
The Presidential tribunal, however, yet to make an official statement on the date to deliver its ruling.
The suit was filed by thethe Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Labour Party (LP) and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) together with their presidential candidates, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Mr. Peter Obi, and Princess Chichi Ojei respectively.
While Obi said he was “robbed” of victory and vowed to “prove it to Nigerians”, Atiku Abubakar of the PDP described the outcome as “a rape of democracy”.
They are alleging that Tinubu was not qualified to contest the election and that there were widespread irregularities and malpractices during the voting process.
They also contended that Tinubu failed to secure a majority of votes cast in the election and 25 per cent of votes cast in the federal capital territory (FCT) which they argued is a constitutional requirement for a candidate to win the election.
The Petitioners also question Tinubu’s eligibility due to allegations of previous indictments and his running mate’s nomination for another position.
The petitioners also faulted Tinubu’s academic record, citizenship, and allegation of criminal record.
They also challenge the election’s validity due to alleged corrupt practices and non-compliance with the Electoral Act.
Tinubu’s lawyers, however, denied the allegations and have asked the court to dismiss the petition.
