ABEOUKTA, OGUN STATE – The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Ogun State is facing fresh questions over its internal processes following conflicting claims surrounding the status of governorship aspirant, Hon. Abayomi Hunye.
The APC leadership now maintains that Hunye was suspended from the party on April 7, 2026. But party records and events that followed that date appear to contradict the claim, raising concerns about transparency, due process, and the credibility of the party’s primary election.
THE TIMELINE THAT DOESN’T ADD UP
According to the APC’s current position, Hunye ceased to be a member in good standing on April 7, 2026.
However, key party activities involving Hunye happened weeks after that date:
1. April 28, 2026 – Nearly three weeks after the alleged suspension, Hunye was allowed to purchase the APC governorship nomination and expression of interest forms.
2. May 11, 2026 – He was screened and cleared by the APC screening committee to contest the primary.
3. May 21, 2026 – He participated fully in the party’s governorship primary election.
All three processes are exclusive to bonafide, eligible members of the party.
FUNDAMENTAL QUESTIONS FOR THE APC
The contradiction has triggered serious questions within and outside the party:
– If Hunye was suspended on April 7, why was he sold a nomination form on April 28?
– How did he pass screening and get cleared on May 11 if he was not a member?
– On what basis was he allowed to contest and vote in the May 21 primary?
Political observers say the APC cannot have it both ways. Either the suspension was never properly effected and communicated, or the party knowingly allowed an “ineligible” person to go through its entire nomination process.
“This is not just about one man. It’s about the integrity of the APC’s internal democracy,” a party chieftain who pleaded anonymity said. “
You can’t suspend someone and then collect money from him, screen him, and let him contest.”
IS THE APC IN DISARRAY?
Critics argue that the conflicting positions expose deeper cracks within the Ogun APC.
“Is the APC a confused party, unable to maintain a consistent position on its own members and internal processes?_” asked a PDP stakeholder in Abeokuta.
“Or is the APC being unjust by relying on a purported suspension after its own actions treated Abayomi Hunye as a fully eligible aspirant?”
The development comes at a time when the APC in Ogun is already dealing with defections and allegations of “politics of bitterness” from former appointees.
