Demola Olarewaju, an aide to the ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, has dismissed suggestions that Atiku’s supporters would automatically back Peter Obi should the ADC presidential candidate step down from the 2027 presidential race.
Olarewaju stated this in a post on his X account, formerly known as Twitter, on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, while strongly defending Atiku and criticizing what he described as pressure from supporters of Obi for the ADC presidential candidate to endorse the NDC presidential candidate, Obi.
“If Atiku steps down and tells us to support Obi, I’ll gladly sit out 2027 because Obi and his supporters have conducted themselves far less than honourably towards Atiku and supporters after Atiku had chosen him to run alongside in 2019,” Olarewaju said.
He added that he believed Atiku deserved greater loyalty from those who previously benefited from his political support.
“AA doesn’t deserve this and posterity will reward it in full measure,” he stated.
Olarewaju also argued that an endorsement from Atiku would not necessarily translate into the transfer of his political support base to Obi, particularly in Northern Nigeria.
“If Atiku steps down and campaigns for Obi in the North, Tinubu still wins Northern votes with the Muslim/Muslim + ‘just 4 more years’ gambit,” he claimed.
According to him, electoral endorsements alone do not determine voting outcomes, arguing that the identity of the candidate on the ballot remains crucial.

He cited previous elections involving candidates supported by Obi as examples of why he believes an endorsement may not automatically translate into electoral victory.
“Obi endorsed ADC’s Mrs. Justina Azuka in Anambra 2025 and she still lost the House of Assembly election. Obi campaigned for George Moghalu in Anambra gubernatorial and Labour Party still lost – because Obi was not on the ballot alongside,” he said.
Olarewaju maintained that Atiku’s supporters would not necessarily abandon their preferred candidate simply because of an endorsement from him.
“If Atiku is not on the ballot, the base won’t shift despite endorsement – stop the blackmail,” he said.
The aide also accused supporters of Obi of mounting undue pressure on Atiku over the 2027 presidential contest.
“If Atiku steps down today, Tinubu wins Northern votes and defeats Obi before 12pm,” he declared.
“Obi joined the coalition and betrayed it for selfish ambition – let everyone meet on the field of politics; what will be must be,” he stated.
“It’s Atiku-Amaechi for us over here and we hope you all will be ok over there,” Olarewaju said.
