As Ijebu-Ode gears up for 2026 Ojude Oba Festival, the historic celebration will proceed with dignity under the leadership of Chief (Dr.) Sonny Folorunso Kuku, the Ogbeni Oja and Regent/Acting Awujale of Ijebuland.
For the first time in living memory, the colourful event will unfold without a reigning Awujale on the throne.
The late Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who passed on July 13, 2025 after a 65-year reign, had directed that the festival must continue uninterrupted during any interregnum.
Organisers, led by Professor Chief Fassy Adetokunboh Yusuf, are faithfully honouring that vision, turning potential solemnity into a resounding celebration of legacy and resilience.
Thousands of regberegbe groups will parade in stunning aso-oke attire, showcasing equestrian displays, traditional music, and vibrant dances at the Awujale Pavilion.
As Regent, Chief Kuku will represent the palace, receive homage from the groups, and preside over proceedings without occupying the sacred throne itself, maintaining deep respect for Ijebu tradition while ensuring continuity.
“This festival is the heartbeat of Ijebuland,” a senior committee member noted. “Under the Regent’s guidance, we celebrate not just culture, but the enduring institution the late Kabiyesi strengthened.”
The 2026 edition stands as a powerful symbol of Ijebu unity and strength, proving that heritage and identity transcend any single ruler.
Sons and daughters of Ijebu are returning home in droves, ready to affirm that Ojude Oba truly endures.
