A Northern Youth Group, popularly known as Arewa Youth Assembly, has called on Members of the House of Representatives to initiate impeachment proceedings against the Speaker of the House, Rt Hon. Tajudeen Abbas.
In a strong worded press statement by the group, signed by it’s Speaker, Mohammed Salihu Danlami, it stated that, “After careful reflection, extensive consultation across communities, political stakeholders, grassroots leaders, and civil society networks, the Arewa Youth Assembly hereby passes a firm, unmistakable, and irreversible vote of no confidence on the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Honourable Abbas Tajudeen.
According to the group. “Under the leadership of Rt Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Nigerians are witnessing a dangerous concentration of power built on favouritism and sectional interest.
“Sensitive Federal institutions and strategic public appointments have been hijacked, manoeuvred, tilted, clustered, and monopolised in favour of one locality, Zaria, leaving vast sections of the state region and country alienated and marginalised.
“This pattern is too consistent to be coincidental or defensible; it reflects a calculated politics of exclusion that mocks Federal Character and insults National Cohesion.
“Among the glaring examples are the appointment of Dr Danjuma A Ismaila as Rector and Chief Executive of the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology in Zaria, Engr Dr Kabiru Mu’azu as Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Research Institute for Chemical Technology in Zaria, Dr Auwal Mustapha Imam as Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Institute of Leather Science and Technology, Hon Bashir Abubakar as Chief Commissioner of the Public Complaints Commission, Hon Sani Akilu Idris as Federal Commissioner representing Kaduna State at the Public Complaints Commission, Aliyu Tajudeen as Managing Director of the Upper Niger River Basin Development Authority, Dr Abduljalal Danbaba as Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Water Resources Institute in Kaduna, Hajiya Sa’adatu Garba Dogonbauchi as Federal Commissioner representing Kaduna State at the National Population Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko as Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Corps Commander Tijjani Iliyasu as Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Kaduna State. When viewed collectively, this concentration of power and privilege around Zaria is indefensible and a full political monopoly.
“We equally demand the zoning of the office of the Speaker to the South in the interest of equity, balance, national reconciliation, and as a practical necessity for restoring confidence in the system and ensuring equitable power distribution.
The office of the Speaker is not a private estate, nor is it a provincial inheritance; it is a national trust that demands balance, fairness, inclusion, and statesmanship. Sadly, the current occupant has reduced this prestigious national office to an instrument of sectional control, a local political project serving a narrow circle tied to one local government, one axis, and unapologetic nepotism.

“When a Speaker of the House uses his influence to cluster opportunities around one local government, he sends a clear message to millions of citizens that they do not matter.
“This is unacceptable, because it deepens distrust, fuels resentment, erodes confidence in democratic institutions, and therefore, Rt Hon. Abbas has no business being the speaker anymore.
“Ironically, a man who should have been the political rallying point of the entire North West, a chief promoter of the All Progressives Congress, and a frontline advocate of the Renewed Hope agenda, has descended into the narrow politics of a single local government.
“What makes this situation more tragic is that despite this overwhelming concentration of appointments and legislative advantages, the Speaker has failed to strengthen the APC even within Zaria, let alone across Kaduna State or the wider region.
‘The party has not been energised, its base has not expanded, and its popularity has not improved. Instead, grassroots confidence has declined, party structures are weakened, supporters feel ignored, and communities feel excluded.
“We regret, deeply and publicly, our past support for Rt Hon. Abbas Tajudeen. We supported him in good faith, believing he possessed the intellectual capacity, political acumen, exposure, and sagacity required to steer regional and national interests responsibly; instead, he turned out to be the very opposite of what we envisaged. This is not merely disappointing; it is shameful.
“The Arewa Youth Assembly states clearly and without ambiguity that our support for the APC in future elections is not guaranteed if Rt Hon. Abbas Tajudeen remains Speaker.
“Grassroots political loyalty is not permanent or automatic; it is earned through justice, fairness, inclusion, and visible performance. What is happening today is steadily destroying the APC brand in the North West and across the North.
“Furthermore, we urge President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in the interest of national balance and political survival, to critically scrutinise and, where necessary, block requests emanating from the office of the Speaker.
Experience has shown that such requests are unlikely to serve the majority but are more likely to advance the interests of a single locality at the expense of national harmony. This trajectory is directly at odds with the” Renewed Hope agenda, and if it continues, the political cost will be severe.
“The warning signs are already visible, and anger is spreading quietly across communities.
“Voters who once stood firmly behind the party are now openly questioning its direction. If” urgent corrective action is not taken, if the activities of the Speaker are left unchecked, the consequences may extend beyond internal party damage and could threaten the party’s electoral prospects in the 2027 general elections.
“Nigeria deserves better; it deserves a Speaker who reflects the spirit of unity, fairness, and national inclusion. The House of Representatives must not become an instrument of local patronage. It must remain a symbol of democratic balance.
“Nigeria must move forward with leadership that unites rather than divides, that serves the nation rather than a locality, and that protects the democratic trust placed in it by the people,” the group concluded.
