Congratulations to specialty doctor in for achieving her 20 years of service in our neonatal unit at WHH.
Dr Akinnawonu joined the Trust in 2006 as a senior house officer and by 2009 moved into her role as a speciality doctor in neonatal care.
Since 2018, she has served as an honorary senior lecturer with King’s College London, teaching future doctors with the same care and patience that she demonstrates in her clinical practice. In 2019, she took on the role of block lead for child health for King’s College Hospital; combining her passion for education with her work here in our Trust.
Dr Akinnawonu completed a postgraduate diploma with merit in 2020, achieving a distinction in neonatal transport – although she later decided to pursue her growing interest in medical education rather than transport medicine. Alongside this, she stepped into broader leadership roles, including:
• BAME Network Chair (2020–2024)
• Trust Appraiser
• Member of the Local Negotiating Committee (LNC)
• Staff Governor for the Trust.
Most recently in 2025, she was appointed Trust LED tutor, further cementing her influence on training and education.
Her team said: “Throughout her career, one theme is unmistakable; she has dedicated her life to caring for our smallest and most vulnerable patients, while simultaneously uplifting colleagues, students, and the wider Trust community.
“Yet, her path has not always been straightforward and she has become known for her motto: ‘when life serves you lemons’ she says with a smile, ‘make lemonade out of it.’”
Congratulations Dr Akinnawonu, on everything you have achieved over the years!
