Tragedy struck on Tuesday February 17 in Enugu State when a giant tree collapsed , fell on two vehicles, a Toyota Hiace bus and a Sienna minivan, killing eleven occupants instantly at the Awhum Village/Market Square in Awhum Community, Udi Local Government Area of the State.
The incident occured around 8PM when the vehicles stopped to allow passengers disembark amidst heavy rain and gusty winds.
Residents say the force of the wind led to the collapse of the Tall Tree which then fell on the two vehicles trapping the 11 occupants.
Spirited efforts to rescue them failed as they were pronounced dead at the hospital where they were taken after they were removed from the rubble of the tree and crushed vehicles.
The Police angle as provided by SP Daniel Ndukwe, the PPRO :
“Preliminary findings indicate that the vehicles had stopped to drop off passengers when the tree, weakened by heavy rainfall, strong winds, and apparent internal decay, collapsed on them.
Upon receiving the report, operatives attached to 9th Mile Division swiftly responded and, with the assistance of community members, rescued four persons trapped in the vehicles and secured the scene.
Regrettably, the eleven other victims were rushed to the hospital but were later confirmed dead by attending doctors. Their remains have been deposited in the mortuary for further necessary procedures.”
