According to a report by The Guardian, on Monday January 12, 2026, Osita Okechukwu, a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has warned that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) risks breaching Nigeria’s rotational presidency convention.
He pointed to the growing influence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar within the party as a key concern.
Okechukwu said Nigeria’s rotational presidency system, which alternates leadership between the North and South, is important for maintaining political balance and stability.
He argued that non-adherence to this principle could undermine democracy and weaken opposition parties.
He suggested that Atiku’s involvement in ADC could disrupt the rotational arrangement, potentially giving one region an advantage over others.
Okechukwu noted that past breaches of the rotation principle had led to instability in Nigeria’s political parties and called for a careful approach to avoid repeating mistakes.
According to him, respecting the rotational system is crucial to sustaining democratic rule and ensuring fairness in leadership.
He warned that ignoring it could create tensions and limit public confidence in the political process.
The warning comes at a time when ADC is gaining attention as an opposition party and preparing for future elections.
Okechukwu highlighted the importance of internal party decisions and their impact on Nigeria’s democratic framework.
He stated that Nigeria’s democracy depends not only on elections but also on adherence to key principles like rotation, which help build trust and stability in the country’s governance.
