…The burden of history demands that we stop rehearsing elections without resolving foundations. Nation building cannot be sustained on emotional hope alone…
….Our return to history must therefore focus deliberately on 1966 and its aftermath. The coup of 15 January 1966 did not only alter governance. It ruptured trust, redefined power, and reshaped national psychology. Sixty years later, we are still living inside its consequences.
If the nation is unwilling to discuss this honestly, then the Church must. The Body of Christ cannot afford silence at this hour. The Church must rediscover her mandate to love all, to rise above ethnic loyalty, and to provide a family-like bond that transcends tribe and religion.
Sadly, the Church has often mirrored the bigotry of the political space rather than confronting it. Ethnic politics has weakened our witness and compromised our mission. History demands repentance and reflection. The Church was present in 1966. The Church has walked through every season since. The Church must now lead the conversation toward healing and truth.
In a few days, it will be sixty years since the events of January 1966. That anniversary is not ceremonial. It is prophetic. It calls for courage, not nostalgia.
This is why the Apostolic Round Table seeks to host hard conversations, “1966 to 2026: the burden of memory and the future of Nigeria.” Not for sensationalism. Not for blame. But for national recovery.
The task before us is not to win the next election alone, but to redefine the nation itself. To ask honestly what Nigeria is, who Nigerians are, and how we choose to live together.
If we fail to do this now, history will repeat itself with greater consequences.
This is the moment to think.
This is the moment to speak.
This is the moment to act.
Nation building cannot wait.
