Dr Umar Ardo has claimed that two influential groups were largely responsible for bringing former President Muhammadu Buhari into political office, identifying them as the Kaduna Mafia and beneficiaries of the Petroleum Trust Fund, popularly known as PTF.
Ardo made the claim during an interview on Channels Television on Sunday, September 6, 2026, while discussing Buhari’s political journey and the individuals and groups he said played significant roles in encouraging the former military head of state to enter politics.
According to Ardo, Buhari did not enter politics alone, as certain influential individuals and political interests were behind his emergence as a major political figure following his time as Nigeria’s military leader.
The political figure said two major groups were particularly involved in bringing Buhari into political office but declined to publicly mention the names of individuals he associated with the Kaduna Mafia.
“Those who brought Buhari into office are 2 groups. The Kaduna mafia, I will not name who and the beneficiaries of PTF,” Ardo said.
The Petroleum Trust Fund was established during the military administration of the late General Sani Abacha, with Buhari serving as chairman of its management committee. The PTF became one of the major public institutions associated with Buhari before his return to partisan politics.
