The Permanent Secretary, Office of Internal Audit (OIA), Mrs Monsurat Titilope Alaka, has reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to entrenching transparency and accountability across all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), while also emphasising the indispensable role of Auditors in safeguarding public resources and strengthening governance processes. Speaking while addressing auditors in the state public service during her maiden meeting with them, the Permanent Secretary, noted that internal auditors remain the backbone of institutional integrity, as they are responsible for ensuring compliance, detecting irregularities, and upholding the financial discipline that sustains public trust. She urged the auditors to hold firmly to accountability and integrity, values she described as non-negotiable for anyone entrusted with the sensitive responsibilities of an internal auditor. Highlighting the demanding nature of the profession, the Permanent Secretary encouraged auditors to perform their duties with total diligence. According to her, the expectations placed on internal auditors require a high level of discipline, focus, and personal responsibility, as their work directly impacts the efficiency and credibility of government operations. Mrs. Alaka further stressed the importance of punctuality and full commitment to duty, reminding auditors that every audit assignment demands flexibility, responsiveness, and a strong sense of ownership. She warned that without these qualities, officers risk being sidelined or failing to meet the benchmarks expected within the service. Addressing leadership within audit units, she advised senior officers and heads of units to create supportive and collaborative work environments. The Permanent Secretary emphasised the need to build healthy professional relationships, mentor subordinates, and communicate instructions clearly and promptly. Such practices, she noted, will not only enhance productivity but also help younger officers gain confidence, competence, and career growth. In addition, the Permanent Secretary encouraged all auditors to invest in continuous professional development, given the ever-evolving nature of the auditing landscape. She urged them to embrace learning opportunities, acquire new skills, and stay updated with modern audit techniques, technologies, and global best practices. Mrs Alaka reiterated that the Office of Internal Audit remains committed to the values of excellence, transparency, accountability, and flexibility, reminding the auditors that their performance is a reflection of these core principles and calling on them to embody these attributes in all aspects of their work.
