The President of the Ijaw National Congress (INC) Prof Benjamin Okaba has launched a fiery response to what he described as blatant insults against the Ijaw Nation and revered elder statesman, Pa Edwin Clark, by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
In an interview, the INC President did not mince words, labeling Wike a “drowning man” who is desperately trying to drag others down with him. He made it clear that the Ijaw people would no longer tolerate Wike’s continuous attacks and disrespect, warning that a political reckoning is near.
He issued a direct challenge to President Bola Tinubu, stating that going forward, the President must make a choice between Nyesom Wike and the Ijaw Nation. According to him, the Ijaw people have been patient for too long, but their resolve should not be mistaken for weakness.
Recalling Wike’s past derogatory remarks, the INC President reminded Nigerians of the time Wike openly wished for “thunder to fire all Ijaw people.” He asserted that the Ijaw, being the original custodians of their heritage, returned the thunder to Wike, which, in his words, accounts for the Minister’s visibly deteriorating physical condition.
On the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, the INC President reaffirmed the Ijaw Nation’s unwavering support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara. He disclosed that the INC had advised the Governor to remain respectful and continue to seek peace, even in the face of provocation, as the entire Ijaw Nation stands firmly behind him.
“This is beyond politics. This is about the dignity of the Ijaw Nation,” he declared. “We will not be disrespected, and we will not allow one man to divide us. Governor Sim Fubara has our full backing, and we will ensure that he is not intimidated or undermined.”
As the political battle in Rivers State rages on, the Ijaw National Congress has drawn a clear line in the sand, signaling that Wike’s influence is no longer absolute. Whether President Tinubu will heed their warning and make a decisive choice remains to be seen.
