An ibadan Magistrate Court presided by Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Olabisi Ogunkanmi, has ordered the remand of Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife; Oriyomi Hamzat, the owner of Agidigbo FM; and Bashorun Islamic High School Principal, Fasasi Abdulahi, at the Agodi Correctional Facility.
Said a source,
” She will be spending Christmas and new years day in a cell in Ibadan.”
The ruling is pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) of the Oyo State Ministry of Justice.
They were arraigned on Tuesday before Chief Magistrate Court 1, Iyaganku, Ibadan, on a four-count charge of conspiracy, acceleration of death, negligent acts causing harm, and failure to provide adequate security and medical facilities.
According to sources, the court premises witnessed tension as supporters of Hamzat gathered, but heavy security presence ensured order.
The situation nearly escalated when police vans conveying the suspects began leaving the court premises.
” Many people came to the court premises protesting against the detention of Oriyomi Hamzat. Nobody protested for Queen Naomi.”
Tension is presently high in ibadan over the senseless deaths of the children and adults who attended a Christmas funfair show organized by Queen Naomi.
Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, owner of a popular local radio station in Ibadan which is loved by the local folks was contracted to publicize the event and draw in the crowds.
Said a source,
” For doing a job he was paid to do, Oriyomi Hamzat who is seen largely as a champion against oppression in Yoruba land and Ibadan through his radio broadcasts will also spend Christmas in a lonely Ibadan prison cell.”
While all of this is playing out, the families of those who attended the Christmas funfair and died are mourning and still in deep shock.
A Source told our reporter,
” it was supposed to be a pre Christmas event to attend and take some goodies home for Christmas. Imagine how many people died in the process.”
