The Academy of Medicine Specialties of Nigeria is a non-profit organization that works outside of government to provide objective advice on medical matters, education and research, medical care, and public health; providing impartial advice on critical healthcare matters. It is a professional Academy of distinguished Professors and academicians selected from across the spectrum of Medicine specialties including the Basic medical sciences, Basic clinical sciences, applied Clinical sciences, and Dental sciences. It is the apex body in the Academic and Scientific field of Medicine in Nigeria. Established In June, 2019, the Academy is committed to the promotion of excellence in Medical Research and Education, the application of research in Medicine, and the enhancement of human health and welfare. The Academy is a merit-based, policy research organization and an honorific membership organization with members elected based on their outstanding professional achievements and commitment to service on matters of significance to health. Our members, renowned for their accomplishments, serve selflessly in various activities that impact the health and well-being of our nation. Election to active membership is both an honour and a commitment to serve in Academy affairs. The Academy is led by several renowned professionals in the field of Medicine among whom we have: Prof. Oladapo Ashiru, who serves as the President of the Academy, and also serves as President of the Africa Reproductive Care Society (ARCS), and is the first black Secretary-General of the International Federation of Fertility Societies (IFFS). Olor’ogun Dr. Sonny Folorunso Kuku who is the current Ogbenioja of Ijebu land, a Consultant Physician and Endocrinologist, is the chairman of our Board of Trustees and brings a wealth of medical expertise and leadership to our organization.Since our inception, the Academy has achieved significant milestones, including:1. Rapid-Response Initiative Team: Our advisory role in the COVID-19 pandemic was pivotal and widely recognized. The Academy addressed the Cholera outbreak through a statement and public advisory in July 2024; while a statement on Mpox was also released in September 2024. The Academy continues to provide essential guidelines through the active involvement of its members in federal and state-level task forces.2. InterAcademy Partnership (IAP): We are proud members of this global network of over 140 national and regional Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine.3. Collaborations: We have fostered collaborations with government entities such as the Ministries of Health & Social Welfare, Education, Science, Technology & Innovation, and the National Universities Commission (N.U.C).4. Advisory Roles: The Academy actively advises the government on critical health and social matters, including but not limited toNational Health Act (Amendment Bill) (2020)Resolution of deadlock between ASUU and the FGPetitioned the National Assembly over the bill seeking to compel medical and dental graduates to render five-year compulsory services within Nigeria before being granted full license to practice. 5. Knowledge Sharing: We have hosted and participated in numerous lectures, webinars, and symposiums addressing a wide array of health topics. These events aim to enhance public health awareness and knowledge among medical peers and the general public.The 4th Annual General Meeting, Scientific Conference, and Induction Ceremony of the Academy will take place in Lagos on Saturday October 26th, 2024 at the Sheraton Hotels and Towers, Ikeja. The event will feature a keynote lecture to be delivered by Dr Mustafa Muhammed Lecky the current Chairperson of the Health Sector Reform Coalition, Nigeria on the topic: “Achieving Effective and Sustainable Reform of the Nigerian Health Sector in a Challenged Economy”. This year’s Induction will have the inauguration of 13 distinguished researchers who have met rigorous selection criteria and demonstrated their exceptional contributions to the field of Medicine. They include the following:Prof. Cecilia Igwilo: is a distinguished Professor of Pharmacy, whose works led to the development of drugs for many prominent pharmaceuticals. Her research works equally received grant supports from eminent organizations. Prof. John Anetor: is a professor of chemical pathology with many profound toxicology works of national and international relevance.Prof. Akinlolu Ojo: is a physician scientist and academic medicine leader who has made seminal contributions to the understanding and management of kidney disease in Nigeria and beyond.Prof. Joseph Fadare: is a professor of Medicine with special interest in drug utilization particularly in older adults as well as antimicrobial stewardship.Prof. Olayinka Ogunleye: is a professor of clinical pharmacology and therapeutics with research focus in rational pharmacotherapy and cost-effective preventive and therapeutic solutions to global burden of diseases.Prof. Victor Lasebikan: is a Professor of Psychiatry and a consultant Psychiatrist. His research focuses on addiction medicine and in 2024, he was ranked among the 3% scientists in Psychiatry and addiction medicine.Prof Oyindamola Abiodun: is a professor of pharmacology with a passion for ethnomedicine and the discovery of new potent and efficacious alternative agents in the management of infectious and chronic diseases.Prof Titilola Samuel: is a professor of endocrinology and molecular oncology. She has done ground breaking works in Genetics and metabolomics.Prof Olufunsho Awodele: is a professor of toxicology and therapeutics with research focus in herbal medicine, Synthetic therapeutics and oxidative Stress Pharmacology.Prof Blessing Jaja: is a Neuroscientist/Clinical Anatomist whose research has resulted to four scientific inventions.Prof Linus Saalu: is a professor of Anatomy, whose works have influenced healthcare policy, education, and community outreach.Prof Abidemi Akindele: is an outstanding pharmacologist with bias for natural products toxicology and drug repurposing.Dr Ogunbayode Ishola: is an associate professor of pharmacology with research focus on discovery of disease modifying therapeutics and identification of genetic markers in populations.5 Distinguished Honorary Fellows will also be inducted at the Induction; they include:Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate – The Minister of Health and Social WelfareDr Tunji Alausa – The Minister of State for Health and Social WelfareHon. Uche Nnaji – The Minister for Innovation, Science and TechnologyDr Yusuf Tanko Sununu – The Minister of State for EducationMr John Oyetan – A retired Bank Director.Also gracing the occasion, we will have the foundation Honorary Fellow of the Academy, Chief Sir Kessington Adebutu.Another key highlight of this year’s event is the inauguration of newly elected Academy officers. The incoming President of the Academy is the Distinguished Emeritus Professor Frank Osato Giwa-Osagie.The Academy remains dedicated to using its expertise to positively impact on the health of the Nigerian populace. We are eager to collaborate with government bodies, international and local organizations, and ministries to enhance medical education and improve healthcare delivery in Nigeria.Our commitment to our mission and vision will continue to drive our efforts, and we are excited about the future as we work towards these goals.
