Abeokuta, City below the Rocks – on ‘90 minutes with Mathematical’
Abeokuta is a Yoruba city with a very rich and uncommon history, culture, topography and people! It has produced 4 Presidents in Nigeria’s political history since Independence!
Although, only one hour away from bustling Lagos, there cannot be a more different city – laid back, tranquil, safe, sophisticated, and a mostly young population of transiting students!
Abeokuta is a city that is reluctant to abandon its semi-urban feel, its serenity, security and peaceful ambience for so-called development. Taxi drivers refuse to increase their fares. House rents are still some of the lowest in Nigeria.
Three persons (male and female) from the ancient town, join me in the morning to look at the past, the present and the prospects of Abeokuta – what makes the city tick and thrive and to remain ever relevant in Nigeria’s socio-cultural, economic and political landscape.
