This is a very serious subject, probably the most important ever on this show. No Nigerian should miss it by disregarding this message. It could be the difference between life and death!
Every day of the past 5 years, or even more, I wake up to a cocktail of medications including one that, I am told, I have to take for the rest of my life!
That should not be. For almost 20 years I have been a consultant (sports) to the Nigerian Heart Foundation; Ambassador for NCDs Nigeria Alliance, and Champion of “Exercise is Medicine” Nigeria. I am supposed to be a model for healthy living, immune from the vagaries of most Non-Communicable diseases.
Yet, 5 years ago, I was diagnosed with Hypertension, probably the result of the challenges of surviving in the harsh environment of Nigeria, taking their toll.
The ugly consequence since then is the psychological and physical trauma of daily struggles to beat the scourge.
No less than 40 million other Nigerians like me harbour one heart-related disease or the other, consuming drugs every day of our lives, perpetually enriching the pharmaceutical companies that manufacture the drugs that may be keeping humans alive but have serious depressing side effects, worse, most times, than the health situation they are meant to manage, not cure!
In short, Hypertension, Diabetes, Obesity and some Cancers, are on the rampage, ‘silent killers’ in our midst, truncating lives prematurely, enslaving humans in a vortex of daily medications, denying thèm happiness, and reducing life expectancy by many years and even decades (in Nigeria it is now 54 years of age).
Yet, my work in sport, health, wellbeing and leisure, scream at me that all of these are avoidable, preventable, and, these days, even reversible. But how?
“Blessed are those that walk or ride a bicycle to school or their place of work daily, for they shall live healthier and longer!”.
The above is a shocking statement of fact…confirmed by science, simple compasses to longevity and happiness. Nigerians can easily live 10 years longer and more, by listening to what I shall be discussing on Saturday morning with 2 distinguished specialists offering simple, effectivè, cheap, but powerful remedies as alternatives to living miserably and dying young.
I am to be joined in a special conversation marking the start of the World Heart Month by Professor Fatai Adeniyi, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, and Chairman of “Exercise is Medicine” Nigeria; and Dr. K. K. Akinroye, Chairman Hospital Management Board, Osun State, and Executive Director of the Nigerian Heart Foundation.
This can be your lottery ticket to a new and happier life. Believe me.
