Golden Oldies is remembering Nigerian Jùjú musician General Prince Adekunle on his death (22 October 1942 – 2 September 2017). He was of Egba origin, from Abeokuta in Ogun State. Prince Adekunle had an illustrious career which spanned over four decades and 15 albums. He established his band, Prince Adekunle & his Western State Brothers in the 1970s before changing the name to General Prince Adekunle & his Supersonic Sounds. Prince Adekunle was a major innovator and force in the jùjú music scene, with his distinctive driving Afrobeat style. Famous musicians such as Sir Shina Peters and Segun Adewale started their careers playing with his band, the Western Brothers. Prince Adekunle is known to have influenced and assisted the careers of Sir Shina Peters and Segun Adewale, who were two of the biggest Nigerian music stars in the 1980s.
Prince Adekunle was known for such hit songs – Aiye Nreti Eleya · Awodi Nfo Soke · You Tell Me that You Love Me · Omo Niyi Omo Nide · Aditu Ede · Eniyan Soro. Awa Lomo Ibile Nigeria. Prince Adekunle is considered one of the great artistes of Jùjú music. He died on September 2, 2017 at the age of 75. May his soul rest in peace.
