Former Military Governor of Ondo State, Chief Bode George, has criticized the decision to deploy troops to Niger while the 2023 Presidential electoral court process is ongoing in Nigeria. In an interview with Arise TV news, George advocated for Ecowas to prioritize diplomatic dialogue with Niger rather than resorting to military intervention. He maintained that although diplomacy might be time-consuming, it remains the optimal approach for Ecowas.
George expressed, “Consider our situation in Nigeria – we are still awaiting the conclusion of the electoral process, yet there’s a readiness to engage in conflict. Let’s envision a scenario where the Court rules that Bola Tinubu didn’t win the election; what then? These things take considerable time; after all, Rome wasn’t constructed in a day. Dialogue and diplomacy are interconnected. Ecowas, by its very definition, constitutes an economic community of States. Economics takes precedence over military matters.”
