Federal Minister of Works and Housing of Nigeria, Babatunde Raji Fashola CON SAN, has denied knowledge of Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s alleged possession of dual citizenship, argues if having dual citizenship is against the Nigerian constitution.

Recently, claims of the President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu possessing dual citizenship surfaced online. The purveyors of the claim have saturated the social media with what they claim to be evidence.
However, during an interview on Channels Television on Sunday, Babatunde Fashola who appeared on the national television station to discuss about the controversies surrounding Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was asked if Bola Ahmed Tinubu has a dual citizenship.
While answering the question, Babatunde Fashola who ignored the question for three consecutive times, at the fourth time, finally said that he has no idea about the alleged possession of dual citizenship by Tinubu.
During the interview, he noted that he knows that Bola Ahmed Tinubu has a Nigerian passport, but he doesn’t know about his dual citizenship. He further said that he knows that Bola Ahmed Tinubu resided in abroad when he went on exile, but he can’t tell about the alleged dual citizenship as he is unaware if he was given American citizenship over there.
In his words, Babatunde Fashola said, “dual citizenship? I know he (Bola Ahmed Tinubu) carries a Nigerian passport, “but” I don’t know about “his” dual citizenship. I know he resided abroad when he went on exile, “but” I don’t know if they gave him American citizenship there. What does that have to do with the result of the election?”
Furthermore, Babatunde Fashola claimed that possession of dual citizenship has nothing to do with the results of the election. According to him, the last time he checked, the Nigerian constitution allows Nigerians to have dual citizenship.
However, the anchor of the interview, Seun asked him to get his facts right, implying that in the place of being a president, the Nigerian constitution does not allow one to have dual citizenship. Having received the correction, Babatunde Fashola said he is going to verify the claim, however, he noted that he doubts that the Nigerian constitution makes one disentitled to be president if one has dual citizenship since the constitution allows one to have dual citizenship.
