On “90 minutes with Mathematical7” this Saturday morning.
He was a god on the track, one of the greatest middle-distance sprinters in history who àlso became one of the greatest sprints coaches. He was a USA Track and Field ‘Hall of Famer’, Double Olympic Gold medalist; World record holder, a talent hunter, developer and inspiration to generations of Nigeria’s greatest sprinters. Although an African American, he had 43% Nigerian blood flowing through his veins.
He served Nigeria through most of 5 decades and chose Nigeria as his final home, developing Nigerian athletes for the world stage.
He lived, died and was buried in Nigeria in fulfilment of his wish as well as that of his family.
If anyone deserves to be celebrated, honoured and immortalised for contrbution to the devepment of Nigerian athletes and athletics, Lee Edward Evans must be counted.
From November 22 to 26, the international athletics competition named after him, the Lee Evans Annual Memorial Track Meet for Under-18 boys and girls in secondary schools in Nigeria will take place in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
