Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused President Bola Tinubu of copying his proposed production subsidy plan after previously dismissing his proposal as economically unsound.
Speaking on Friday, October 9, 2026, at the inauguration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Presidential Campaign Council in Abuja, Atiku criticised the Federal Government’s 30-day petrol discount announced for NNPC stations.
Atiku said Tinubu had earlier described him as ignorant of economic policy when he proposed targeted support to reduce fuel costs. He argued that the government had now adopted the principle he previously advocated but reduced it to a temporary 30-day discount.
Atiku challenged the President to explain what would happen after the discount expires, insisting that Nigerians need lasting relief from rising fuel prices and the high cost of living.
He said his production subsidy proposal would support petroleum products refined in Nigeria and sold to Nigerians, with the support capped, included in the budget and independently audited.
Atiku described the government’s discount as a temporary measure that would not provide lasting relief to families, transport operators, farmers and businesses struggling with rising costs.
He also accused Tinubu’s administration of making Nigerians endure years of hardship while presenting the 30-day discount as relief, insisting that the country needs a lasting solution to its economic challenges.
