An International Chamber of Commerce tribunal in Paris has raised concerns over a $500,000 payment made to Jennifer Douglas Abubakar, former wife of ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, during proceedings over the disputed Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Project.
The payment, made by Sunrise Power promoter Leno Adesanya in January 2003, was examined alongside allegations that it could have been connected to efforts to influence the Mambilla contract. The tribunal said the explanation that it was a legitimate foreign-exchange transaction was not supported by documentary or witness evidence, but also stated that there was no evidence that Atiku actually used his official position to facilitate Sunrise’s contract. The tribunal ultimately rejected Sunrise’s claims against Nigeria.
