Nigerian drug dealer Tony Obina has reportedly been recaptured after allegedly breaking out of the Kakata Central Prison in Margibi County, Liberia, triggering a security operation across the area.
Obina was among several inmates who reportedly escaped from the facility on Sunday after a jailbreak was confirmed by Liberia’s Ministry of Justice.
In a video circulating online, Obina and another man were being escorted back to the prison after they were reportedly found by local residents. Obina appeared in the video wearing only blue boxers as he was taken into custody.
The prison break was confirmed in a statement issued by Liberia’s Ministry of Justice on Sunday, September 20, 2026.
According to the ministry, a number of inmates escaped from the Kakata Central Prison, prompting the Joint Security of Liberia to launch an immediate operation to track down the fugitives.
The ministry said the Bureau of Corrections and Rehabilitation was also reviewing prison records to determine the precise number and identities of the escapees.
Authorities urged residents to remain alert and report any information about the whereabouts of the fugitives to the police or other security agencies.
However, the ministry warned members of the public not to take matters into their own hands by attempting to capture or harbour escaped inmates.
