A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential aspirant, Omoyele Sowore, to be kept in Kuje Correctional Centre (Kuje Prison).
Justice Mohammed Umar gave the order today after Sowore appeared in court.
The activist will remain in pris0n until Wednesday, June 24, when his lawyers will argue to get his bail back.
Sowore is facing cybercrime charges. The case started after he posted on social media in August 2025, calling President Bola Tinubu “a cr!m!nal.”
He denies any wrongdoing.
His bail was cancelled earlier on June 16 because he was not in court for a hearing.
Sowore said he changed his legal team, which caused the absence.
The court rejected his request for the judge to step down from the case.
Even as he was sent to prison, Sowore remained strong and bold.
He told the court and supporters:
“I came prepared. I brought my prison bag.”
He added that he is ready to go to prison to continue mobilizing people for change.
“All these are happening for a good reason.
Somebody must make sacrifices that will benefit this country,” he said.
Sowore promised to keep f!ght!ng for activism and good governance in Nigeria.
Supporters gathered outside the court and protested as Department of State Services (DSS) operatives took Sowore away.
Activist Doris Ogala and others showed solidarity and vowed to stand with him.
Sowore, a well-known critic of the government and founder of Sahara Reporters, has been arrested several times in the past for his activism.
This latest development has sparked fresh talks about freedom of speech and the treatment of government critics in Nigeria.
The case continues on June 24.
