The Obafemi Awolowo Posthumous Birthday Lecture

March 6th, 2026 – a poignant day as we commemorated the 117th posthumous birthday of the sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, at Ikenne. The Obafemi Awolowo Foundation did a stellar job in organizing the event, which drew remarkable Nigerians, including two icons – Chief Emeka Anyaoku, the erudite former Commonwealth Secretary-General, and His Royal Majesty, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, The Obi of Onitsha, a custodian of tradition and progress.
These gentlemen, both advanced in age (Chief Anyaoku, 93!), yet remarkably fit and agile, stole the show as they climbed the aisles to present awards to distinguished Nigerians many times. Their vitality was a testament to their enduring legacy. Intriguingly, when asked about their secrets to fitness and longevity, they gave identical answers: divine grace and discipline. A profound reminder that purpose, faith, and self-control are timeless elixirs.
Their brilliance is indeed intoxicating, inspiring a new generation to emulate their dedication, integrity, and passion for Nigeria. As we celebrate Chief Awolowo’s enduring legacy, these icons remind us that greatness is not just about achievement, but about character and the impact we leave on others.
