There are several reports circulating online suggesting that the Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, wants Barr. Ademorin Kuye to emerge as the next Awujale of Ijebuland.
63yrs Old Barr. Kuye is a politician like the governor and has had a long political career in Lagos State, first serving as Chairman of Somolu Local Government, later as a Lagos State Commissioner, and currently as a Member of the House of Representatives representing Somolu.
The Fusengbuwa Ruling House has completed its responsibility by presenting 10 candidates out of about 90 aspirants who initially showed interest. Barr. Ademorin Kuye is also among the 10 shortlisted candidates.
However, there are strong rumours in town that the government prefers him among the 10, while others argue that he is allegedly from the female lineage, raising questions about why he should be considered over the many male bloodlines of the Fusengbuwa House.
This controversy has reportedly led to protests on the streets of Ijebu-Ode currently according to PunchNews online this morning, amid claims of an attempt by the government to impose a candidate. The Ogun State Government has since denied these allegations, distancing itself from the rumours.
In my view, the family has fulfilled its obligation by presenting its 10 most eligible candidates. Ideally, I would have preferred that the final selection be concluded within the family. However, tradition places the next stage in the hands of the kingmakers, who are expected to subject the candidates to proper traditional scrutiny to determine the most suitable choice.
Who knows, Hon Kuye may still turn out to be the best 😊 or perhaps the worst.
Some have suggested that Ifá divination should take over at this point, whichever way tradition permits.
One thing is certain, the Yorùbá people and not only the Ijebus are watching closely. Ire oo
