Before the match started, the capacity audience at the home of Brentford sang an old, beautiful and evergreen chorus made popular in a Beatles song titled ‘Hey Jude’.
The song was adapted from the melody of a song titled ‘Eni ri nkan he’ originally composed and sung by a legendary Nigerian Highlife Ambrose Campbell in 1965.
The tragedy is that, the song, now a global anthem was never credited by the Beatles to Ambrose Campbell.
As the song reverberated around the Gtech Community Stadium in Brentford, it crossed my mind again that only very few people in that arena knew the origin of the song.
All you need to confirm to who belongs the rightful claim to the melody is to google search, check out and listen to the tail end of the Ambrose Campbell’s song. It was released in 1965, a good two years before the Beatles came out with ‘Hey Jude’ in 1977.
Just for fun, and for posterity, search for the original song and enjoy it along with the fans of Brentford FC after their 3-1 trouncing of Newcastle United.
