JAY-Z on his mother’s sacrifices for the family: “I didn’t have an easy life growing up. My dad abandoned my family when I was 11, leaving my mom to raise four kids on her own in Brooklyn, New York. My mom worked as an office worker at an investment firm. Sometimes she took on a part-time job as a security guard just to provide for us.
“When I became a successful rapper and entrepreneur, my mom retired. At some point, she got bored of not working. In 2003, she became the president of my foundation, the Shawn Carter Foundation.”
