Days after he was reported to have been nominated by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the party’s vice presidential candidate for 2027, Rotimi Amaechi as well as Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate, has failed to publicly acknowledge Amaechi’s nomination.
Neither Atiku Abubakar nor Rotimi Amaechi has publicly reacted to the report either directly or through their media team. This has made many question the veracity of the report about the former Rivers state governor being nominated as the ADC vice presidential candidate.
In view of this, a top member of the ADC national youth leadership has informed the Reliant.ng that Amaechi’s announcement as the party’s vice presidential candidate was premature and a calculated move by the party’s national leadership to arm-twist Atiku Abubakar into avoiding what they described as similar miscalculation he committed in 2022.
According to the source, Atiku Abubakar was being pressured by the party’s national leadership and some northern political elites to pick Amaechi as his running mate while the former vice president was sceptical about Amaechi.
The former vice president is said to be considering Osun state former governor, Rauf Aregbesola as a more politically formidable option for the vice president role and as one who is capable of winning his state and influencing the southwest Muslims to vote for Atiku Abubakar. Unlike Rotimi Amaechi whose political influence in Rivers state is unlikely going to earn Atiku Abubakar 40% of the votes cast in the presidential election and whose political influence is incapable of making any meaning contribution outside of Rivers state.
Hence, Atiku Abubakar is said to be considering a Muslim-muslim ticket by placing Rauf Aregbesola above Rotimi Amaechi in his pecking order.
However, the ADC stakeholders who were averse to the idea of a Muslim-muslim ticket as well as Atiku Abubakar choosing Aregbesola over Amaechi, in a move to arm-twist Atiku Abubakar into accepting their vice presidential choice, informed media outlets that Rotimi Amaechi has been nominated as the party’s vice presidential candidate.
“As you can see, Atiku is yet to confirm Amaechi’s nomination. Even Amaechi himself has not acknowledged his nomination. I can confirm to you that it is David Mark and others who did that. They want to force Atiku to accept their choice. Left for Atiku, he prefers Aregbesola because of the political factor. Aregbesola is more politically influential than Amaechi who will struggle to give Atiku 40% in Rivers unlike Aregbesola who aside having the capability to win Osun state also has strong influence on the southwest Muslims”.
