A fresh political storm has erupted within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the camp of presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar launched a fierce counterattack against former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, over allegations that the party’s presidential primary was manipulated.
In a strongly worded statement, Atiku’s spokesman, Phrank Shaibu, accused Lawal of attempting to discredit a democratic process without presenting any credible evidence to support his explosive claims.
The controversy erupted after Lawal announced his resignation from the ADC, alleging that the presidential primary was influenced behind the scenes. However, Atiku’s camp dismissed the accusations as politically motivated, insisting that the exercise was transparent and reflected the will of party members nationwide.
“Where is the evidence?” the Atiku camp asked, challenging Lawal to produce documents, witnesses, or verifiable facts to support what it described as sensational allegations.
The former Vice President’s camp further questioned Lawal’s consistency, noting that he appeared willing to accept the outcome of the ADC governorship primary in Adamawa State, where his cousin, Omar Suleiman, emerged victorious, while condemning the presidential contest that produced Atiku.
“Nigerians have every right to ask whether the process was only fair when it favored his family and suddenly became rigged when it did not produce his preferred presidential candidate,” the statement declared.
