A viral video on Saturday night showed one of the wives of former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, at the gates of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) headquarters in Abuja where he is being detained.
It sparked widespread curiosity. The woman, who identified herself as Aisha El-Rufai, stated that she was prevented from delivering dinner to her husband.
In many polygamous households, it is customary for the wife whose turn it is on a given day to prepare and serve her husband’s meals. In this instance, that duty apparently fell to Aisha.
Her unexpected appearance quickly set tongues wagging, with many asking a simple question: exactly how many wives does Nasir El-Rufai have? The curiosity stemmed from the fact that Aisha had not previously been known in the public sphere as one of El-Rufai’s wives.
The three women more commonly associated with the former governor — Hadiza, Asia, and Ummi — have long been visible figures in his political and family life, each with children by him.
What many did not know, however, is that El-Rufai is also married to another Aisha, a Cameroonian woman who is said to be his fourth wife. Coincidentally, she shares the same first name as one of his other wives. Her appearance in the now-viral video at the ICPC headquarters marked what appears to be her first moment in the national spotlight.
Under Islamic law, a man who is financially and morally capable is permitted to marry up to four wives, but no more. In Hausa idiom, one might say “ya rufe ƙofa” — literally, “he has shut the door” — meaning there is no room for another wife. By that measure, El-Rufai’s household is, quite literally, full.
