A deepening leadership crisis within the Labour Party has taken a dramatic turn as youth leaders from across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory openly rejected the leadership claim of Nenadi Usman and reaffirmed their support for the party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure.
The youth leaders, in a communiqué issued after a virtual meeting on March 10, declared their unwavering loyalty to Abure and the National Secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, insisting that the duo remain the legitimate leaders of the party.
The statement followed growing tensions triggered by a controversial court ruling which, according to the youth leaders, attempted to install Usman as interim caretaker chairman of the party.
Describing the development as “shocking and unbelievable,” the group argued that the ruling effectively sought to impose a non-member as the head of the party.
The communiqué was issued after the meeting of Labour Party State Youth Leaders held under the leadership of the National Youth Leader, Kennedy Ahanotu, alongside regional youth representatives from across the country.
Rising from the meeting, the youth leaders unanimously passed a vote of confidence in Abure, Farouk and the party’s National Working Committee, stating that the current leadership remains constitutionally and morally recognised.
They also condemned what they described as the “unlawful invasion and temporary hijack” of the party’s national secretariat in Abuja by individuals allegedly loyal to Usman.
In a strong warning, the youth leaders said party youths were prepared to mobilise and storm the national secretariat in the coming weeks if the situation persists.
According to them, those occupying the party headquarters under Usman’s influence should expect resistance from the youth wing of the party.
