Recent political developments in Ogun State have sparked debate over the wave of endorsements being announced in support of Governor Dapo Abiodun. While headlines may suggest a groundswell of backing from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Remo and other parts of the state, critics argue that the reality tells a different story.
According to observers, the so-called Remo APC endorsements are largely driven by a faction within the party made up of political appointees of the governor. These individuals, many of whom currently hold positions in the administration, are said to be spearheading public displays of support that may not necessarily reflect the broader sentiment of party members or the general voting population.
For instance, the recent walk in Ijebu Ode was reportedly organized by Olamide Lawal, the Senior Adviser to the Governor on Youth. Critics maintain that such events are orchestrated by those on the government’s payroll rather than by grassroots APC members or ordinary voters. They argue that this distinction is important and should be clearly understood by the public.
Skeptics also point out that many of these same appointees were in office during the 2023 governorship elections when the APC lost both the Governorship and House of Assembly seats in Ogun East Senatorial District. They question what has changed since then, suggesting that the current endorsements may be more about political survival and loyalty to their benefactor than a reflection of widespread popular support.
