Yusuf Buhari, son of late former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, has shared a personal account of how life changed for his family after his father exited political power.
He recounted that shortly after former President Goodluck Jonathan called to congratulate his father on winning the 2015 presidential election, his phone was flooded with attention, receiving up to 2,000 calls daily from old classmates, distant relatives, former domestic staff, and various acquaintances.
Yusuf said the volume of calls dropped sharply after his father handed over power to President Bola Tinubu, falling to about 100 calls a day. Following his father’s burial, the number reduced further to roughly 20 daily calls, mostly from close family members and business associates.
Reflecting on the experience, he described it as a stark reminder of how public attention often fades once political power is gone.
