In furtherance of the mandate of Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu administration to strengthen preventive healthcare, promote quality education, and improve human capital development, Lagos State Health District V, under the leadership of the Permanent Secretary, Dr Oladapo Asiyanbi, has successfully implemented a School Health Programme in five public primary schools within the district.
The programme, which commenced on Tuesday, was implemented across selected Public Primary Schools within the district, including Christ the King Primary School, Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area, 5th Avenue Nursery and Primary School, Festac Town, Amuwo-Odofin Local Government, St. Michael Nursery and Primary School, Ojo Local Government Area, and Gbenopo Primary School, Ajara-Topa, Badagry.
This initiative is in line with the THEMES Plus Agenda of the Lagos State Government, particularly the pillars of Health and Environment, Education and Technology, and Social Inclusion, with emphasis on early childhood care and development as a foundation for lifelong wellbeing and academic excellence.
Representing the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Health District V, Dr Oladapo Asiyanbi, the Director, Medical Services and Disease Control, Dr Ahmad Amina Bello, stated that the School Health Programme was aimed at educating pupils on cleanliness, personal safety, and emotional well-being through fun and engaging activities suitable for their age.
Speaking during the programme, Dr. Ahmad described the initiative as a critical intervention that aligns with the Sanwo-Olu Administration’s vision of building a healthier and more productive population, by bringing essential healthcare services directly into our primary schools, the Lagos State Government, under the leadership of Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, is laying a strong foundation for a brighter and more prosperous future for our children and for Lagos State as a whole.
The School Health Programme featured a range of child-focused interventions, including Health education, Basic Medical Screening, to assess pupils’ general well-being and disease identification, health issues such as poor eyesight
dental checks, including tooth examinations and extractions where necessary, deworming exercises, and sessions on handwashing and personal hygiene.
The programme aims to record enthusiastic participation from Pupils, Teachers and Head Teachers, among others. Pupils also gained practical knowledge on healthy habits to practise both in school and at home, particularly the importance of brushing their teeth twice daily and maintaining good personal hygiene.
Lagos State Health District V reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining and expanding School Health Programmes across more primary schools within the district, in line with the Sanwo-Olu Administration’s goal of delivering accessible health services to more primary and secondary schools within the State.
