Most people I spoke to regarding desirability or otherwise of electing President Tinubu for another four years in office are of the view that there are reasons to be afraid of what he would do next.
That with the way the President appointed and is still appointing only members of his ethnic group as heads of most important federal government departments and parastatals; especially through which revenues go into or out of coffers of the federal government and he shows no remorse even after these misdeeds are showed to him, it is dangerous to give him another opportunity to oversee the affairs of the nation.
Another reason for not reelecting Tinubu is that the foundation of his presidency is faulty. Against all wise counsel in 2022, Tinubu, a Muslim, insisted on, and ran with Kashim, a Muslim, as his Vice President in a country where both religions are almost evenly divided. Despite this fact, if re-elected in 2027, it means the fear of effect of religious imbalance in the affairs of the federal government would continue to engender religious and ethnic suspicion among Christians and Muslims, especially in the North where minority Christians remain fearful, which may likely lead to violence in some places.
There is another reason why Tinubu should no longer be trusted. He has a baggage that he is carrying that make other world leaders look at Nigeria with contempt. The fact is that In 1993, he actually forfeited $460,000 to the American government after authorities linked the funds to proceeds of narcotics trafficking and is now making nonsense of the work of NDLEA as he is busy pardoning people convicted drug related offenses in Nigeria.
Again for the North, Tinubu has spent very little on Agriculture, the bedrock of northern economy and survival, and he has unfortunately opened the floodgates for the importation of grains which not only pauperized northern Nigerian farmers, but it means for the nation, he is shipping jobs abroad. Re-electing him means this will continue.
Number four, Tinubu is a danger to the sustenance of the country’s democracy. He is trying by all means to make Nigeria a one party state. He is a dictator who threatened and arrested Okowa, who he coerced into joining the APC.
Under Tinubu, what happened during Obasanjo’s dubious third term bid is child’s play. PDP governors and opposition leaders are now either in APC for fear of the EFCC or are being physically arrested as Sen. Tambuwal and former Attorney General Malami. Today PDP is no more. Wadata Plaza is under Wike’s lock and key. And Tinubu interferes in the affairs of ADC to ensure that the coalition does not work.
Tinubu should no longer be trusted much less with a second term. He made the 2024 budget but implemented just 20% of it. The capital budget for 2025 was zero implementation. This is 2026. The implementation of the 2026 budget will expire in March. He said he runs his budgets concurrently. This is clearly 419. It means Tinubu does not, and will not implement any budgets at all. He operates on his own spending out of budget and we do not have a National Assembly to rein him in.
The worst of it is that Tinubu is now alleged to have tempered with the gazetted versions of the tax reforms laws after having been signed by him into law on June 26, 2025. The tax reforms law is now alleged to contain substantial differences from the versions passed by the National Assembly. This is a grave allegation.
If there were a National Assembly (for with Akpabio there is none), in the country, if this allegation is proved, it would amount to a rape of the constitution and a gross violation of same and may lead to his impeachment.
President Tinubu is an executive. His function is to execute the laws made by the legislature. He is not a legislator. He has no power to make laws for us. For this, we have the authority and responsibility to hold him to the limits of the power delegated to him by the people. He has proved incapable of staying within his constitutional authority and should therefore never be elected again.
