The Lagos State Ministry of Tertiary Education, through its Agency for Mass Education, today, 8th December 2025, successfully hosted the 2026 edition of the annual Adult Learners Quiz Competition at the Adeyemi-Bero Auditorium in Alausa. The intellectually charged event served as a dynamic platform to recognise, celebrate, and motivate adult learners from across the state’s local government areas for their commitment to academic excellence and personal growth.
The auditorium was charged with a spirit of focused determination as the Director of the Agency for Mass Education, Mrs. Oluwakemi Kalesanwo, inaugurated the proceedings. In her keynote address, she lauded the transformative vision of the Lagos State Government in prioritising education at all levels.
In her words, “Today, we celebrate not just knowledge, but the remarkable courage it takes to pursue it at any stage of life. She extended her commendation directly to the participants, applauding their resilience and dedication in balancing life’s responsibilities with their educational aspirations”.
The significance of the initiative was further amplified by a series of inspiring goodwill messages from key government stakeholders.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Scholarship Board, Mrs. Rasheedat Daranijo, emphasised the alignment of such programmes with the state’s human capital development goals, while the Special Adviser of the Parastatals Monitoring Office, Mr. Ibrahim Obanikoro Babajide, praised the initiative and reaffirmed the State’s commitment to ensuring that nobody is left behind in its education and human development programme.
Other goodwill messages were delivered by Dr Hussein Luqman, an associate professor at the Lagos State University of Education. These messages collectively commended the administration’s holistic commitment to creating accessible pathways for lifelong learning and skill acquisition.
The high point of the event featured a robust quiz competition, structured into English and Yoruba categories to promote linguistic inclusivity and cultural relevance. Participants engaged in a challenging contest across four key subject areas: English Language, Mathematics, General Knowledge, and Spelling, navigating five intense rounds that tested both their recall and critical thinking abilities.
After a highly competitive session, outstanding winners emerged. In the English category, Mrs. Fatumbi Kehinde Mary from Eti-Osa Local Government Area demonstrated exceptional proficiency to claim the first-place position. She was closely followed by Mr. Balogun Fatai from Epe in second place, and Mr. Saka Fatai Olajide from Apapa Local Government in third. The Yoruba category witnessed a strong performance by Mr. Akorede Jamal of Amuwo Odofin Local Government, who secured the top spot. Mrs. Christiannah Kehinde, from Kosofe and Mrs. Solaja Kehinde, from Ikorodu, earned second and third place honours, respectively, showcasing the depth of talent among the learners.
In a gesture underscoring the principle that every participant is a victor, all contestants were presented with commemorative gifts. The event culminated with closing remarks from the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tertiary Education, who declared that by choosing to learn and compete today, each one of them had already won, and they are all champions in their pursuit of self-betterment.
