Early Life and Education
Chief Adekunle Ojora was born in 1932 into the prominent Ojora and Adele royal families of Lagos, a lineage that endowed him with the chieftaincy title of Otunba of Lagos. He pursued formal education in journalism at Regent Street Polytechnic, London, where he honed his skills in media and communication. This foundation prepared him for an early career in journalism before transitioning into the corporate sector.
Journalism Career
Ojora began his professional journey in the early 1950s at the BBC, rising to the position of assistant editor. Upon returning to Nigeria, he joined the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) as a reporter and later served as an information officer in Ibadan, establishing a reputation for professionalism and diligence in media.
Transition to Business
In 1961, Ojora entered the corporate world as Public Relations Manager at the United African Company (UAC). By 1962, he had ascended to Executive Director, reflecting his exceptional managerial and strategic abilities. Over time, his career increasingly focused on commercial ventures across the oil, shipping, and investment sectors.
Political and Corporate Leadership
Ojora’s influence extended into public service and corporate leadership. In 1966, he served as a member of the Lagos City Council. The following year, he became Managing Director of WEMABOD, a regional property and investment company, and Chairman of the Nigerian National Shipping Line, succeeding Kola Balogun.
In 1971, he was appointed Chairman of AGIP Nigeria Limited, a position he held until the company’s acquisition by Unipetrol in 2002. Under his stewardship, AGIP became a significant player in Nigeria’s oil and energy sector.

Chief Ojora is married to Erelu Ojuolape Ojora, and they are the parents of Toyin Saraki, a lawyer and healthcare advocate who is married to former Senate President Bukola Saraki. Ojora’s family remains influential in both business and public service circles in Nigeria.
Awards and Recognition
Chief Ojora holds numerous national honors, including Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) and Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON). In June 2024, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu publicly congratulated him on his 92nd birthday, acknowledging his enduring contributions to Nigeria’s corporate sector.
