The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation is aware of a video currently circulating on social media depicting an unfortunate altercation between Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) and a motorist. We recognise the public’s concern and are committed to providing a clear and transparent account of the incident.
On 25th November 2025, VIS officers stopped an articulated vehicle for a critical safety violation: its container was not properly latched, posing an immediate and serious risk to other road users. Upon further inspection, the vehicle was found to be dangerously unroadworthy, with a faulty braking system that constituted a major safety hazard.
Instead of cooperating with the officers to allow for a full inspection and necessary safety interventions, the driver attempted to flee the scene. In the process, he drove recklessly, damaging several vehicles and further endangering officers and members of the public.
While the driver’s actions were unlawful and highly dangerous, the Ministry reiterates that it does not condone any form of excessive force by its officers. The conduct exhibited in the video does not represent the professional standards expected of VIS personnel nor our commitment to de-escalating conflict during enforcement operations.
Accordingly, the Ministry has commenced a full, fair, and impartial investigation into the conduct of the officers involved. Any officer found culpable of unprofessional behaviour or use of excessive force will face appropriate disciplinary measures in line with service regulations. Likewise, the driver will be prosecuted for his violations and the dangers posed to the public.
The Ministry remains committed to transparency and will make the findings of the investigation public upon conclusion.
The Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) continues to uphold its mandate of ensuring the safety and roadworthiness of vehicles operating within Lagos State. This incident, though regrettable, underscores the daily challenges faced by our officers and the critical need for motorists to maintain their vehicles and cooperate during routine checks.
