A STORYTELLER SPECIAL: THE NORTHERN REAWAKENING: SILENT MOVES, GROWING DISCONTENT, AND THE BATTLE AHEAD
By: Al Humphrey Onyanabo
There’s a growing unease in the North — a quiet storm gathering strength beneath the surface of Nigeria’s political landscape. While the South lines up behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in dramatic waves of endorsements and defections, the North is watching, calculating, and — according to insiders — preparing a counter move.
Discontent is brewing. Many northern political elites feel increasingly sidelined in the Tinubu administration. Key appointments, influential positions, and access to power corridors — once heavily dominated by northern interests — are now, in their view, being redistributed without balance. The silence from the region is not apathy; it is strategy.
“There’s a feeling of being shut out,” a northern political source confided. “The President is building an empire, and it’s clear the northern bloc is no longer at the center of it.”
But the North is not one to cry foul in public. Instead, they are retreating to their drawing boards, building new alliances quietly, across party lines and regional divides. Meetings are being held behind closed doors — in Kaduna, Kano, Sokoto, and Abuja. Former power brokers, governors, and elder statesmen are said to be uniting once more, not for nostalgia, but for purpose.
A key move in the shadows is the exploration of a new political platform. Disillusioned with both the APC and PDP, many northern leaders are reportedly considering backing or reviving an alternative party — one they can control, one that can act as a vehicle to challenge Tinubu in 2027.
The North has history on its side — it knows how to wait, how to strike when the time is right. In 2023, it delivered crucial votes to ensure a fragile balance. In 2027, it may choose to reclaim power entirely.
The silence from the North is not peace — it is preparation.
Tinubu may be the master strategist, but the North is far from asleep. The next game is forming, and when the pieces move, the center may not hold.
The North is watching. And waiting.
