A recent survey conducted by our reporters has revealed that Nigerians are not excited about the reported price slash of petrol by Dangote Refinery from N960 to N890 per liter. Despite the reduction, Nigerians are still buying petrol for between N990 to N1100 per liter, depending on the state they reside in.
The survey, which sampled opinions from various parts of the country, showed that many Nigerians are skeptical about the price slash, citing the fact that petrol marketers still dictate prices. “It’s the marketers that decide the price, not Dangote Refinery,” said one respondent. “So, why get excited about a price slash that doesn’t reflect in the actual price we pay?”
Furthermore, transporters have refused to reduce prices for both inter-state and intra-city transportation, rendering the price slash ineffective. “What’s the point of reducing the price of petrol if transporters won’t reduce their fares?” asked another respondent.
When asked what would excite them, many Nigerians said that a significant price crash to between N600 to N650 per liter would be a welcome development. “That’s the kind of price slash that would make a real difference in our lives,” said one respondent.
The survey’s findings highlight the disconnect between the reported price slash and the reality on the ground. While Dangote Refinery’s move may be seen as a positive step, it is clear that Nigerians are not impressed. They want to see tangible results that would impact their daily lives.
As one respondent succinctly put it, “We don’t need a tokenistic price slash. We need a real reduction that would make petrol affordable for all Nigerians.”
