The social media has been buzzing these past few days with one matter with vocal supporters lined up on both sides ; Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Afe Babalola, instituted a libel and defamation case against lawyer and author, Dele Farotimi, in an Ekiti State court. The case took a contentious turn when Dele Farotimi was arrested in Lagos, driven to Ekiti, and remanded in prison pending a bail hearing.
The controversy surrounds Farotimi’s book, which allegedly contains statements deemed defamatory by Babalola. In response, the court has issued an injunction banning the sale, printing, and circulation of the book. Babalola is now seeking to have Farotimi disbarred, a move that many see as an attempt to silence a vocal critic.
However, experts warn that this aggressive approach may ultimately backfire. By resorting to litigation and seeking to suppress Farotimi’s book, Babalola may inadvertently draw more attention to the very issues he seeks to conceal.
